Reaction to Independent Review of Modern Slavery Act publication

22 May 2019

Reacting to the publication of the Independent Review of the Modern Slavery Act, Tom Wills from the international development charity Traidcraft Exchange said:

“We agree with the Review’s recommendation that tougher action from the Government is needed to enforce its own modern slavery law.

“As the Review says, the Government should create a publicly accessible modern slavery database where companies are required to upload their modern slavery statements.

“The public have a right to know which companies are covered by the Modern Slavery Act, and which have complied with the legislation, so a list of relevant businesses should be part of the new database.”

The Independent Review of Modern Slavery was published in the wake of a joint Traidcraft Exchange and Fashion Revolution campaign asking the Home Office to set up a modern slavery database.
