Julia is hardworking, talented and imaginative.

She has everything you need to be a success in business. If she’d been born here in the UK, no doubt she’d be in charge of a flourishing food business today.

But Julia wasn’t born in the UK.

She was born in a part of northern Kenya that is badly afflicted by drought – and no matter what she tried, she couldn’t make a success of her farm.

By ‘success’, we mean that despite all her hard work, Julia was struggling to provide enough food for her family and to send her children to school – basic needs that many of us take for granted.

“Life was definitely hard.

Sometimes we did not have enough school fees for the children and they would be sent home.

When they are sent away, I would have to work odd jobs in order to scrape their school fees together.”

All hardworking people the world over deserve a fair chance.

Here in the UK, to be an entrepreneur is to be special – imaginative, willing to try new things and take risks. But when you live in a country like Kenya, you have to be inventive and hardworking just to survive.

Kenya is a poor country and the area in which Julia lives is one of the poorest. People there are particularly affected by drought and malnutrition and 63% live in poverty.

But with training in water conservation, business skills, and collective negotiation, Julia and her fellow farmers can adapt their methods to beat climate change and come together to negotiate a fair price for their produce.

“Whilst others said the land was useless I worked every day for one year, and have seen huge changes.”

When we first started working alongside Julia...

She was a shy woman, who worked her farm alone. She had struggled for many years to make a living from the land, but she had no other choice. And year after year she was failing.

Julia was distraught that her children didn’t have enough to eat and that she couldn’t afford to send them to school. But things have changed.

“Whilst others said the land was useless I worked every day for one year, and have seen huge changes.”

Thanks to support from our Northern Kenya programme, Julia has gained new farming skills and knowledge to complement her intelligence and industry. Her farm has become so successful that she is a respected community leader – heading up the local farmers’ co-operative.

“The Bible says when you fall down, you must get up. You don’t just sit there, stuck. You get up and move on. That is what success is to me—not giving up.”

Julia's next step...

Is to expand into planting fruit trees, and soon Julia’s family will be able to afford  to line the water pan (pictured above) they have worked so hard to dig – meaning they can store precious rainwater. Julia had doubts, but she never gave up, and her rewards are richly deserved. Now her children go to school, there’s enough food for everyone, and she has a real chance of building a secure future for her family.

“The Bible says when you fall down, you must get up. You don’t just sit there, stuck. You get up and move on. That is what success is to me—not giving up.”

Unfortunately, for every wonderful success story like Julia’s, there are thousands more that will not end well – even though the people in them are just as hardworking and deserving of a happy ending as Julia.

With belief and perseverance, together, we can change that.

You can help us reach more hidden entrepreneurs like Julia – and give them the support they need. Plus, if you donate before the 11th of April, the UK government will double your contribution – a great investment.

“I have been given the morale to continue this work because of this project. When I entered it, I was provided with the knowledge of how to properly tend to my farm. I can’t let this knowledge go to waste so I have to keep at this work. It has made me love farming even more.”

With your support, we can level the playing field for people like Julia, giving them a better chance of building a brighter future.
